Perth-designed Miss Universe dress divides critics

Sea-ing really is believing when it comes to this year’s Miss Universe Australia dress.
Perth model Caris Tiivel this week unveiled the controversial creation by Perth fashion designer Steph Audino which attempts to resemble the Great Barrier Reef.
And despite the good intentions, the dress divided the critics immediately.
Tiivel, 23, said she hoped it would pressure politicians in Australia and overseas to address coral bleaching.
The national costume features a beaded jumpsuit, to represent the colours and textures of the coral, and a skirt overlay with 100m of fabric to portray the ocean’s waves.
"It’s always nice to have a story behind your costume," the Helena Valley-raised model said.
It is one of four outfits she will wear at the Miss Universe final, which will take place in the Philippines on January 30.
Tiivel, who has not visited the reef, will travel to the Philippines next Thursday to start commitments for the event.
Australia has had a strong record at the Miss Universe Pageant. In 2004, Jennifer Hawkins won the crown for Australia for the second time. Monika Radulovic, Renae Ayris, Jesinta Campbell and Rachael Finch are just some of the success stories from the international pageant.
