Talent agency CANCELS Miss USA swimsuit competition and people are not happy
OFFICIALS for Miss Teen USA are furious that the new owners have pulled the plug on the bikini portion of the beauty contest.
But local Miss Teen USA officials are seething about the decision after the show was bought from President-elect Donald Trump.
US talent agency WME/IMG paid a reported $22million to buy the competition – as well as Miss Universe and Miss USA – from Trump in September 2015.
The beauty pageants went on sale after Univision dropped the rights to air the shows over the then-presidential candidate's controversial remarks about Mexican immigrants.
The company hadn’t made any major changes to the competitions until last year, when the swimsuit section of Miss Teen USA was cancelled.
But the decision riled local officials.
“The girls are very proud of their bodies and work hard to get that way,” Paula Miles – who oversees pageants in Louisiana, Alabama and North and South Carolina – told the New York Post.
Some expect more changes to come when the Miss Universe pageant airs on January 29.
Michael Antinoro, the company's head of production, says that the changes are long overdue.
He said: “Anecdotally speaking, beauty pageants are not politically forward-thinking but we want to empower women to get away from stereotypes like ‘you look like a beauty queen’.”
Steve Harvey – one of the biggest TV presenters in the US – will remain the competition's host, despite mistakenly announcing the wrong winner at least year's pageant.
He told Colombian stunner Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo she was the winner, only to find out she was actually the runner-up.
Bungling presenter Harvey was actually supposed to announce Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines as the winner.
