Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — More than a dozen Miss Universe 2016 delegates got their feet wet on Saturday when they visited Boracay for a swimwear photo shoot and some dragon-boat rowing.
The Department of Tourism (DOT) said in a press statement that hundreds of residents gave the Miss Universe entourage a rousing welcome upon their arrival at Godofredo Ramos Airport in Caticlan.
Malay town officials, along with an Ati-Atihan dance group, led the throng of welcomers for the delegates, who included Miss Argentina, Miss Australia, Miss Belize, Miss Chile, Miss Costa Rica, Miss Ecuador, Miss Guyana, Miss Malta, Miss Mexico, Miss Myanmar, Miss Namibia, Miss Nicaragua, Miss Poland, Miss Turkey, Miss U.S. Virgin Island and Miss Honduras.
"This is unbelievable!" Miss Australia Caris Tiivel said in the statement. "All these folks, young and old, turned out to welcome us."
Meanwhile, Miss Myanmar Htet Htet Htun said, "Boracay is even more exciting and meaningful. The people are very friendly and joyful to be with."
Apart from the photo shoot, the delegates also learned about the indigenous Ati culture by trying their hand on weaving and fishnet-making.
"The intricate weaving shows the rich Filipino culture," said Miss Mexico Kristal Silva.
Malay town mayor Ciceron Cawaling and DOT Assistant Secretary Ricky Alegre joined Miss Universe private sponsors, headed by former-Governor Luis Chavit Singson and Solar Entertainment, at the event.
Also there were Tessa Paz Alviz, Solar Entertainment vice-president for Programming & Marketing, and Miss Universe first-runner up Shamcey Supsup, who hosted the event.
The Miss Universe 2016 coronation will be on Jan. 30, 2017 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The program will be broadcast live in 190 countries from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
