An Aboriginal teenager from a tiny outback township will be the first indigenous model to represent the Northern Territory in the Miss World Australia after she was spotted by a scout while withdrawing money from an ATM.
Maminydjama Maymuru, 19, whose model name is "Magnolia", initially rejected an on-the-spot offer to appear on a catwalk at an upcoming fashion show because she was completing her high school exams.
A year later, she was shopping at a supermarket when she was spotted by the same scout.   She agreed to "try something different" and made her first fashion show appearance last October in Darwin, the territory's capital.
"I thought - I'm a woman just like everybody else," she told ABC News.
"If people don't accept me just because I'm indigenous or from community, it won't bother me… I was very, very nervous. I thought: 'What if I fall over or trip? I'll be on the news.' But I threw [those thoughts] away and decided to get through with it."

Ms Maymuru, from Yirrkala,  a tiny community  which is hundreds of miles from the nearest city, has since made national headlines after she was selected to represent the Northern Territory in the Miss World national finals in July. About 30 per cent of the territory’s population is Aboriginal – by far the largest proportion of any state or territory.
Mehali Tsangaris, the agent who spotted her, said: "I think Magnolia is the girl that could spark a revolution."
Ms Maymuru’s "breakthrough" follows the growing success of Aboriginal models in a development likened to the emergence several decades ago of supermodels Iman and Naomi Campbell
"Maymaru is smashing stereotyped notions of blonde, blue-eyed beauty," Dr Liz Conor, an Aboriginal studies academic, wrote on The Conversation website.

"Still, the question remains whether Aboriginal women like her can assert a distinct Aboriginal beauty without falling into entrenched notions of the ‘Native Belle’, with all its trappings of exoticism and objectification."
Samantha Harris, 25, whose mother is Aboriginal and father is of German-English heritage, has appeared on numerous magazine covers and been described as Australia’s first Aboriginal supermodel.
Maymuru, who is 5 feet 10 inches tall, said she was enjoying her new career but would “trade anything” to return to her hometown for a weekend of fishing and camping.
"I want people to know that it took a lot for me to come out of my shell and do this," she said.
"I wanted to break the cycle of how people see life back in community."

¡Enhorabuena Canarias!

2016 Miss USA contestants arrive at MGM Grand

Serious conversations are underway for the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants to have a permanent home in Las Vegas, I can reliably and exclusively report.
This Sunday, the 2016 Miss USA Pageant airs on Fox as a three-hour telecast from Las Vegas after a two-year absence when it was based in Baton Rouge, La., after a run here at Planet Hollywood from 2008 to 2013.
This year, the glamour girls are headquartered at MGM Grand and T-Mobile Arena. Here is Richard Corey’s YouTube video of this year’s contestants arriving at MGM Grand.
When I asked Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe Organization that also oversees Miss USA, if a new deal in Las Vegas was for three years, she told me:
“Right now, we’re here for this show. But we definitely are looking at and we have started to talk about a long-term residency in Las Vegas for our pageants: Miss USA and Miss Universe.
“Look around — why wouldn’t I be back here? This is Las Vegas. Las Vegas is our second home. We’ve always put on amazing shows here. Our new owners, William Morris Endeavor International Management Group, love Las Vegas because it’s exciting — it’s great.
“They know how to put on events, and that’s really what they’re all about as far as what kind of show they can deliver. Frankly, we deliver the best shows when we’re here in Las Vegas.”
Both pageants were previously owned by Donald Trump, who sold them at the start of his presidential run.
“I was only in T-Mobile Arena when they were building it, and it is a huge venue,” Paula continued. “I think you’ll see it’ll be pretty full on camera. The interesting thing is we needed more backstage room. We’re going to have 52 blow dryers going on at the same time. It’ll look good on camera.
“This will be a bigger show than Baton Rouge, and we have some great talent. The fact that The Backstreet Boys are kicking off their summer tour with this show brings a lot of excitement to it, and also with Chris Young.
“We’re bringing in a lot of great talent. Everybody loves being in Las Vegas, so we hope we will be calling this home for a long, long time to come.”
Steve Harvey, who was involved in the Miss Universe blunder in December naming Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez the winner when it should have been Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines, returns to host Miss Universe in December.
This year’s broadcast Sunday is preceded by the preliminary pageant Wednesday to determine the 15 finalists who will be highlighted on the Sunday telecast co-hosted by three-time Emmy Award nomineeTerrence “J” Jenkins, host of the new dating series “Coupled” on Fox and for seven years was the host of “106 & Park.”
His co-host will be named soon. Body activist Ashley Graham will be on duty as backstage host as finalists prepare for their moment under the stage spotlights.
Updated at 3:13 p.m.: Emmy Award winner Julianne Hough (“Dancing With the Stars,” “Burlesque,” “Rock of Ages”) has been announced as co-host and creative producer of Sunday’s pageant.
