A graduate of Dowling Catholic High School is preparing to compete in the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas.

Twenty-six-year-old Kelsey Weier, of West Des Moines, won the Miss Iowa Pageant in October, earning the right to represent the Hawkeye State at the national competition.

Weier works at a salon in Clive and didn’t get into the pageant scene until she was 23. She said she’s not nervous about competing against women who have been in pageants their entire lives.

“It’s not just going up and strutting your stuff onstage,” she said. “It’s also working on your interview skills and being able to communicate and talk to people. And those are lifelong skills that I’ll be able to take with me the rest of my life.”

The Miss USA pageant is May 14, but Weier leaves next week for interviews and preliminary rounds.

Only the top 15 women make it to the national broadcast.
