Record nine to compete for the 15th Miss Tibet crown

The 15th edition of the Miss Tibet Pageant with nine contestants arriving on Monday received the most contestants ever in the Pageant’s 15-year history.

Director of the Pageant Lobsang Wangyal said that it is a sign that Tibetans are opening up with changing times. “Young Tibetan women are embracing modernity and are becoming conscious about all-round personal development.”

Wangyal said that the nine contestants are all beautiful, intelligent, and ambitious.

The contestants are: Chemi Kyizom, 20, from Delhi; Migmar Dolma, 22, from New York; Saldon, 19, from Vienna; Tenzin Khechoe, 22, from Bangalore; Tenzin Nordron, 20, from Chauntra; Tenzin Norzom, 22, from Manali; Tenzin Paldon, 21, from Kollegal; Tenzin Yangkyi, 25, from Byalakuppe; Tenzin Yeshi, 20, from Bylakuppe.

Four editions of the Pageant — 2003, 2005, 2013, and 2014 — saw a lone contestant, who then became the walkover winner. The Pageant was started in 2002.

While introducing the contestants to the press, Wangyal said that the Pageant in itself is not a political event, and unscrupulous acts by the Chinese government to block Tibetan representatives from participating in international pageants are uncalled for.

“Every opportunity is not politics, and young women need many such platforms if we are to be practical about Women Empowerment.”

The contestants will be tested in seven rounds over three days, commencing with the Swimsuit Round on 2 June. This will be followed by Talk and Talent Rounds at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) on 3 June, and the Grand Finale will be held on 4 June at the TIPA Grounds in McLeod Ganj.

As in the past, the winner will win one lakh (100,000.00) rupees, fifty thousand for the First Runner-up, and twenty five thousand for the Second Runner-up. Winner’s prize has been sponsored by Tenzin Charlie of Phurba International, a company based in Taiwan, and the second prize has been sponsored by Tenpa Dorjee from California, who has started the “My Village” project in his former place of residence to help unemployed Tibetans youths in Bylakuppe.
