Miss Universe Crowns: A Peep into the History

Miss Universe is one of the Top 2 rated pageants in the world, along with Miss World. A pageant is known by its winner and by its crown. While most pageants have a signature crown since long, Miss Universe crowns have changed 10 times since its inception in 1952. Each and crown had a unique design and a lovely history. Here are few of the facts we present you for each crown. Go through them and let us know which one was your favourite through the voting poll in the end.

The Romanov Imperial nuptial crown

This crown was previously owned by the Czar of Russia and had 1529 flawless diamonds embeded into it. It lasted only for single year for crowning of the very first Miss Universe Armi Kuusela from Finland in 1952.

The Metallic Bronze crown

This crown was made from plain bronze sheet and didn’t have any gems or diamond featuring onto it. It’s very rare to see such crowns. It was used only for one year to crown Christiane Martel in 1953.

Star of the Universe

The Star of the Universe crown was used for next 6 years which featured approx. 1000 oriental cultured pearls and black pearls set in solid gold and platinum. The approximate worth is $500,000.

The Rhinestone crown

This crown was used for the 10th Anniversary of the Miss Universe organisation and was worn by Marlene Schmidt from Germany and Norma Nolan from Argentina. It was the first every rhinestone crown in the pageantry.

The Sarah Coventry crown

This crown was designed by  Sarah Coventry, a known jewelry maker. The center piece featured a female holding a scepter which focused upon women empowerment.

This crown was worn by maximum number of winners. This was an upgraded version of previous Sarah Coventry crown.  Many believe that this was one of the most beautiful crowns in Miss Universe history. The last queen to wear this was Denise Quinones.

The Mikimoto Crown

The Mikimoto Crown
This crown was tagged as the most elegant crown of all the versions. It was designed by Mikimoto from Japan to honour 50th anniversary of the pageant. It depicted the phoenix rising, signifying status, power, and beauty. The crown has 500 diamonds of almost 30 carats (6.0 g), 120 South Sea and Akoya pearls, ranging in size from 3 to 18 mm diameter and is valued at $250,000.

CAO Fine Jewelry crown

Valued at $120,000, it was made of 18-carat white and yellow gold and had more than 1,000 precious stones. This was worn only once in 2008 by Dayana Mendoza from Venezuela. The crown received negative feedback from the fans.

This crown has history of its own. It was chosen by fans across the globe by voting it highest from 3 crowns. It was promoted as an eco-friendly crown because the stones were all synthetic. The rubies in the center were indication of  Miss Universe’s HIV/AIDS education and awareness cause.

The DIC crown

The DIC crown
The design reflects the Manhattan skyline as homage to the home of the Miss Universe Organization. Paulina Vega was the first ever winner to wear this crown.
