Pia and Megan in different directions

BOTH Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Megan Lynne Talde Young brought the highest beauty honors to the Philippines by bagging the most prestigious beauty titles. Wurtzbach gave the Philippines its third Miss Universe crown in 2015, while Young became the first Filipina to win the Miss World title in 2013.
Looking back, both ladies chose different paths to pursue during and right after their reign. Both had some show-business experience before they became beauty queens. And both seem to want to continue to try their luck in the acting business someday.
Right after passing on her crown early this year, Wurtzbach carefully studied her moves and immediately signed with IMG Universe (not IMG Models, as she has clarified), so technically she still has about three years with the Miss Universe Organization. She continues to be a sought-after endorser for both local and international brands, something that Wurtzbach should be happy about. She has to be reminded, though, that more than about the millions companies are willing to pay her, it’s about premium, and once she has built that, negotiations will be a breeze for her management.
We thought that after winning the Miss World Crown in 2013, Young would be ensconced in the same league as former Miss World winner Aishwarya Rai of India, who also did movies but was smart to partner only with the best. Rai also carefully chose her international endorsements. Longines and L’Oreal were two of the more popular brands she associated her name with.
We’re not quite sure if  Young was also considered by international brands to be their face and spokesman, and if there were offers, perhaps the news didn’t reach the Philippines. What we know is that Young chose to become a television star, and accepted a role in the remake of the Philippine production of a Mexican telenovela that did her no good at all. Young’s acting was one-dimensional and not impressive, and critics were terribly disappointed. We reckon she lost all opportunities to build her premium as the first Filipina to be crowned Miss World by accepting to play the title role in Marimar.
Oh, yes, Young did become the face of a local bank, and she also endorsed a shampoo brand. But why did the majority of international brands keep their distance from her? No one really has the answer, and we can only speculate.
On the other hand, Wurtzbach also took on some local brands, but she also did the international beauty brand Olay, the US brand Image Skincare and the Yamaymay lingerie and swimwear brand, among others.  We also saw a Philippine Airlines commercial featuring Wurtzbach  sometime during her reign.
On the love front, we cannot tell others who to love, but one thing many are sure of: Young’s romantic liaison with an actor didn’t help her either in her quest for bigger things.
Wurtzbach, meanwhile, made a lot of noise when she had a brief romantic stint with Michael Varshavski, popularly known as Doctor Mike, People Magazine’s Sexiest Doctor Alive for 2015. And before she could recover from their breakup, Wurtzbach was already playing beautiful music with international racing driver Marlon Stockinger.
But even queens don’t know what the future holds for them. Last we heard, Young has signed a five-year deal with the Innovative Artists Agency, hoping to jump-start an acting career in the US. She is reported to be leaving the Philippines soon. Young’s last TV project was the hit prime-time series Alyas Robin Hood for GMA.
Meanwhile, the colorful life story of Wurtzbach prior to her becoming a beauty queen will be told in ABS-CBN’s Maalaala Mo Kaya, and the beautiful Liza Soberano will get to play Wurtzbach.  There were initial reports that the network wanted Wurtzbach to play herself, but the talent fee for the lead role was too small for the Miss Universe, which is why the next best option was to pick the network’s most beautiful actress to play Wurtzbach and just pay the beauty queen the rights to her inspiring story.
Everything is a decision, they say, and we hope that both women who did us all proud in the international pageant arena will make only the best decisions so they will continue to make their dreams come true.
MISS KOREA PHILIPPINES
WITH thousands of Koreans living in the Philippines, it’s inevitable that something like a Miss Korea Philippines will take place.
For the very first time, the Philippines has been tapped to play host to the Southeast Asian regional preliminaries to select the candidates who will compete in the Miss Korea national pageant.
The pageant is a brainchild of Hankook Ilbo, more popularly known as The Korea Times, one of the major dailies in South Korea and the leading English-Korean newspaper in the US. The paper launched the first Miss Korea pageant in 1957 and opened a big door for Korean women to showcase their natural beauty and have a voice for their advocacies.
This year the Philippines has been chosen to host the first-ever regional preliminaries in Southeast Asia following the roster of other preliminaries already held in the US, China and Japan.
The pageant, which has gathered Korean ladies currently residing in the Philippines, has begun training and workshops under professional Korean pageant experts. The event will be held on May 30 at the City of Dreams in Pasay City.
