Tourism chief says MUO offered Manila the hosting rights for 2017 beauty tilt scheduled in November

MANILA – Philippines’ Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo yesterday revealed that the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) has asked Manila to host this year’s pageant scheduled in November.
Teo told ABS-CBN’s Mario Dumaual that the tourism department is studying the offer and will make a decision soon.
Manila hosted the 65th Miss Universe last January and the finals was held at the Mall of Arena (MOA) Arena. Iris Mittenaere of France was crowned the winner.

Teo said the MUO was pleased with Manila’s hosting of the pageant, which the organization claimed, overshadowed the pre-events of the Super Bowl even after the pageant. The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sports events in the US.
“Uusually, the Super Bowl is number one but the Miss Universe pageant was still trending (in social media) so they really want it badly here in the Philippines,” Teo said.
Should they accept the offer to host the 2017 pageant, Teo said her department wants control of the event.
Teo said much like the pageant last January, the government will not shell out a single centavo and the department will tap the private sector to should the expenses.
Meanwhile, Teo said the pageant boosted tourism in the country as evidenced by news and posts in social media recently. GAC/Expat Media
