When you really think about it, it's more amazing when a beauty pageant manages to go off without a hitch.
There's heels, hairspray and some pretty antiquated views of what's important for women. It's a nightmare.
Even knowing that, though, this has been a particularly bad year for pageants going wrong.
WRONG MISS UNIVERSE
I remember yelling across the newsroom as this went down. Miss Universe host Steve Harvey named Miss Columbia as the winner, but quickly realised he'd misspoken.
Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, was the real winner, and Columbia's Ariadna Gutierrez was the first runner-up. Yikes.
You can imagine how awkward the crown-swap was.
Harvey apologised both in the moment and later on Twitter, but wow. The damage was done.
