Laurel, a clinical officer at Barnsley hospitals special care baby unit, said: 'I never felt good enough and I had lost all my confidence. I didn't go out like other girls did. I was like an empty little soul.'
It wasn't until Laurel was approached by the director of the Miss South Yorkshire to enter the contest that she decided to get involved.
Laurel said: 'I saw some other girls on Facebook doing pageants and at first I wasn't sure as it can be quite nerve wracking going against girls who do a lot of pageants.'

She went onto win Miss Charity in 2015, gaining a wild card place at the Miss Great Britain pageant.

The beauty queen entered Miss British Isles and was crowned Miss Barnsley before going on to win Miss North title.
Laurels said: 'My Nan was so proud. She's such as inspiration and she was keen for me to do pageants.'
Laurel's Grandmother, Marilyn, received the Miss Barnsley title at the age of 21 and won a trophy and sash as well as a holiday to Morecambe and £50 in cash, which she explains was a lot at the time.
Marilyn said: 'You had to apply to the Barnsley chronicle and send in a picture of yourself.
'Some 280 girls entered, 25 were selected to wear dresses and 12 were selected to go to the final at the Barnsley civic hall, you even had to do a swimsuit contest.
'There is a lot more involved than there used to be. When I did it, it was just about parading up and down and looking beautiful. Now it's about everything, beauty, brains and personality.
'I'm very proud of her and when she told me she was entering I really wanted her to do it. I was so pleased it was like history repeating itself.
'I always tell Laurel to be natural and be herself but most of all to enjoy it.'
The glamorous granny still keeps up her beauty regime and said: 'I always wear fake eyelashes everyday, I even gave birth to my children wearing a set.
'I cleanse, tone and nourish every night to keep my skin looking young and I do yoga every day for 30 minutes.'
Laurel will now be entered into the running for Miss British Isles with her Nan by her side and Laurel said: 'I want this to be a positive thing for Barnsley.'
