Miss Barbados World Will Compete At Miss World 2017
You may have noticed that in recent years there has been no Miss Barbados World. After the 2014 Miss World Pageant, former Miss Barbados director decided not to hold another Miss Barbados World Pageant. (Read: Miss World 2017 To Be Held In China)
The Fall of Miss Barbados World
Since 1974, Barbados has sent 24 women to compete for the title of Miss World. It has had one Top 16 placement, one Top 10 placement, two People’s Choice Awards and two Talent Awards. There has never been a Miss World from Barbados.
The organization took a two-year hiatus when former Miss Barbados World, Leah Marville, gave up the franchise. Marville said that putting on the pageant had become a yearly struggle and she would not be continuing with the system.
Because there has not been a pageant, Miss Barbados has not been seen on stage recently. That is about to change this year.
The Return and Revamp of Miss Barbados World
There is a new franchise holder, Caribbean Market Centre, and a new national director, Rodney Powers. He is no stranger to the planet of pageantry, as he has experience with the Miss Universe Organization, the Donald Trump Foundation, and inter-school pageants.
He is excited about taking on this role and says his focus is to “develop young ladies . . . where they can represent their country as ambassadors.” He would like the women to become “humanitarians, who are able to do charity work, work with others, build programs to help people.” (Read: 8 Things You Need To Know Before Watching Miss World)
So far in the online advertisements, the new franchise has had 44 women express their interest in competing. Directors are thrilled with this response as the initial goal was 10-12 contestants.
The last Miss Barbados to compete at Miss World, Zoé Trotman, is fully on board with the plan to bring back the Miss Barbados World program and will be helping the new organizers put on a phenomenal show.
The competition is set to take place on September 24 with the staging theme of “Barbados Takes Flight.” We certainly will tune in to see how the show goes!
