Miss Iceland's Mic Drop Moment After She Was Told She Was 'Too Fat' For The Beauty Pageant
She stood up for herself and penned an amazing open letter to the pageant director.
Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir, better known as Miss Iceland, stood up for all women and girls when she was told she should skip meals to lose weight for a beauty pageant. The young model has an athletic and toned body, making the suggestion all the more shocking.
Instead of feeling bad or developing an eating disorder, Miss Iceland penned an open letter to the pageant and quit. The internet has been cheering her on ever since.
Here's what the Icelandic beauty posted in a handwritten note on Instagram. “I am a very strong woman but sometimes my strength isn’t enough. Your staff told me that I had to loose weight for the finals because I have to (sic) much fat on me and also to big shoulders. They told me to eat less and then you would like me more."
"I decided to leave. I’ve been Miss World Iceland, placed 14th after judging interview in Miss World, I won another pageant (Miss EM) and with all my passion and hard work to your pageant 4 days before stage they tell me that I’m too fat for you. Actually if anyone tells me that I’m too fat or whatever, they just don’t deserve me. And that’s why I left. Miss Grand International doesn’t deserve my face, body, personality, or heart."
“I truly hope that the organisation opens their eyes because the year is 2016 and if you are gonna hold an international pageant you have to be able to see the international beauty."
“In my country my body shape is perfect. And that’s what I’m gonna remember. No one will ever tell me anything else.”
Her goodbye letter has over 10,000 likes and the Twitterverse exploded with support for Miss Iceland after her decision to quit the pageant. The Icelandic flag emoji has seldom gotten so much use!
One of the most interesting results of Miss Iceland's decision to quit the pageant is that Nike took notice of her. The athletic-wear company hired her on to model their clothes.
The irony that Nike considers her fit enough to model stretch pants while the pageant thought she was too fat is not lost on Miss Iceland. She proudly posted a photo of her in running pants declaring that her sporty body is the reason why Nike wanted to work with her.
So to recap: Nike, the partner of Michael Jordan, Maria Sharapova, Tiger Woods, and many more top athletes, considers Miss Iceland to be in good enough shape to pay her to model their clothes. Meanwhile, the Miss Grand International pageant thought she should skip a few meals.
There is no clearer indication that pageants encourage unhealthy body weights than this. When competitions urge healthy people to lose weight, they are endangering those contestants and encouraging others to have an unhealthy lifestyle.
We should celebrate and emulate those people who have worked hard to make themselves healthy. Imitating people who have starved themselves to achieve their weight would be disastrous for everyone involved.
Congratulations to Miss Iceland for drawing attention to this madness and refusing to play a dangerous game. We're excited to see where her career takes her.
