New DOT 7 director no stranger to Cebu

 Thursday, December 01, 2016
ALTHOUGH the new regional tourism director had yet to assume his post yesterday, those in the Department of Tourism 7 are confident in his ability to steer local tourism in the right direction.
Catalino Chan III was expected at the DOT 7 office yesterday but he did not arrive.
Officer-in-Charge Judy Gabato, who has been serving since Sept. 1, awaited his arrival but was told he was still in Tangub City.
Gabato received orders to proceed to the DOT national office on Saturday.
As the leadership role in DOT 7 undergoes a change, Gabato said that she is assured of the new regional director’s deep knowledge about the region, especially Cebu.
Prior to his new post, Chan was the regional director of DOT in Northern Mindanao. Even before he joined the tourism department, Chan had served as a tour guide in Cebu years ago and became a tourism officer in Camiguin. Chan, as Gabato knows, also has a residential property in a subdivision in Cebu City.
“He’s not new to Cebu,” Gabato said.
Chan will replace former director Rowena Montecillo, who tendered her courtesy resignation in response to a memorandum circular issued by the Office of the President directing all presidential appointees to tender their courtesy resignations last August.
Gabato, who served as chief tourism operations officer, was later designated officer-in-charge by DOT Secretary Wanda Teo.
Montecillo was last seen inside the DOT 7 premises last Nov. 23, according to employees.
So far, both Gabato and Chan have not yet discussed tourism plans for Cebu.
However, with Cebu hosting the swimsuit competition of the Miss Universe beauty pageant in January and five meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in April, Gabato said planning for these international events are ongoing.
She reiterated that the government will support the Miss Universe pageant, but without any financial obligations, following a directive from Duterte. The government support will instead come in the form of security, and possibly beautification projects.
