(UPDATED) The Miss Universe fashion show in Davao City will push through, tourism officials said, after being cancelled to "prevent controversies that may arise."
The show was put back on after a meeting on Saturday between tourism officials, Davao designers and representatives of veteran designer Renee Salud, tourism undersecretary Kat de Castro told ABS-CBN News.
De Castro said that Davao designers will be dressing up 10 candidates for the event, which will take place on January 19 at the SMX Davao Convention Center, more than a week ahead of the pageant's coronation night on January 30.
Aztec Barba, president of the Davao Fashion and Design Council Foundation Inc. (DFDCFI), praised the decision, but added that her colleagues will be negotiating to dress up more pageant candidates.
The DFDCFI earlier panned the Miss Universe hosting committee's plan to have industry veteran Renee Salud, whom they labeled as a "non-Mindananoan" designer, to create the outfits for the show.
"Call it proper and befitting, the Mindanaoan designers have all the rights and benefits to best represent the distinctive fashion and style of Mindanao, in the first place," a statement from the group read.
Following the outcry, the Department of Tourism announced the event's cancellation.
"We just had to decide that we cancel it, para wala nang gulo (We just had to decide that we cancel it to avoid any conflict)," De Castro had said in an interview on DZMM.
It was Salud, she said, who presented a concept of showcasing Mindanao weaves in a fashion show. The focus will be on Mindanao fabric, and not on the designers, she said
