LAYTON — Things are changing a bit for the Miss Utah USA pageant and Miss Teen Utah USA pageant this year, and they’re looking for contestants to enjoy the fun.
This year, the pageant will be held in November at Layton High School. This is the first time the pageant has been this far north, said Brandon Stauffer, production director for the pageant. Stauffer has been the Utah Liaison for the show for several years, working with Britt Boyse who directs the pageant, but lives in Arizona, where she also directs the Arizona pageant.
“Brandon has been singing the praises of the Layton (High School) theater for years, and we are excited to bring the pageant to this venue,” Boyse said. “He runs the stage show, and he is very familiar with the facility and layout. Plus, we will be able to use the students there and get them involved.”
Stauffer also is a technical director for Layton High School’s theater program.
The two held a meeting for prospective contestants for both the Miss Utah and Miss Teen Utah pageants last week in Layton.
There are some other changes to the pageant as well.
The Miss Teen pageant will not have a bathing suit competition but rather a fitness competition where the girls will wear more loose-fitting exercise clothes with exercise-type shoes rather than the high heals and swim suits normally worn. The Miss Utah contestants will still have a swimsuit competition.
Boyse thinks the change will be good, considering the teen contestants are between 14 and 18. The Miss Utah contestants are between 18 and 27 years old. This year, the two pageants will be held at the same time on the same night. Winners of each pageant go on to the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants.
Stauffer said most people don’t realize they don’t have to have won a smaller city or county pageant to be in the Miss Utah USA or Miss Teen pageants. All they have to do is apply, which can be done online at the pageant’s website

Boyse said the girls apply and are screened, but the screening process is not intensive, per se. “It’s really a journey of self-discovery,” Boyse said. “We like them to find what makes them unique, special and beautiful. Each girl has their own unique beauty.”
Layton resident Sage Cazier will compete in her first pageant when she competes this fall in the Miss Utah pageant.
“I’ve always wanted to have the experience and try something new,” Cazier said.
The current Miss Utah USA, Teale Murdock, competed eight times before winning her 2016 crown. She has loved the experience each time and all that she’s learned. “I felt like I got to know myself better and gained a lot of maturity,” she said. She feels the networking aspect of win has helped her and feels as if her life is just beginning when she hands off her crown this year.
She likes the idea that the younger girls won’t compete in the bathing suit competition. “It’s interesting and gives them a more accurate body image for their age,” Murdock said.
Others competing agree.
Thelina Smith will compete this year for the first time in the Miss Utah pageant but likes that the younger girls will have a break swimsuit-wise. Smith attends Brigham Young University and has always loved to watch pageants. She is originally from New Mexico where it is more difficult to compete, so she is thrilled to have the chance in Utah.
“This is way to open to everyone and I think it is the best,” Smith said.
Young women can still sign up, and both Stauffer and Boyse said it is best to work to get sponsorships to pay some of the fees.
“People think it’s harder than it is. We can help and advise,” Boyse said.

There will be more preliminary and information meetings in the coming weeks as well, which will be posted on the website. Stauffer said they hope to have at least 25 to 30 contestants for each contest.
