Miss Universe Australia talks about her win

Miss Universe Australia winner Caris Tiivel reveals battle with depression, anxiety

MISS Universe Australia Caris Tiivel said she had overcome anxiety and depression to be crowned the winner of the beauty pageant in Melbourne last night.
“I’m someone that has suffered from anxiety and depression in the past and a lot of people think you are always smiling, you are always happy all the time, there is nothing wrong with you,” she said.
“But that’s the stigma that comes with depression.
“A lot of people don’t know when someone is suffering.
“I would really like to support a cause like that, and provide some assistance to people who are going through a tough time.”
Tiivel won the competition ahead of Elise Chambellant from Queensland, and Rose McEvoy from New South Wales.
She couldn’t believe her luck in getting the chance to represent Australia in the Miss Universe contest.
“There are so many emotions, but mostly just pure happiness,” she said.
“I can’t believe this has happened.
“I really hope I can do everybody proud in the competition.”
Ms Tivel is from Western Australia.
The contestants were judged throughout the night on swimwear, evening wear and answering a series of questions at the event, held at the Sofitel Hotel.
The final five were Rose McEvoy from NSW, Elise Chambellant and Jasmine Stringer from QLD, Marijana Radmanovic from Victoria and Caris Tivel from WA.

There were also charity workers, multi lingual finalists and students.
