22-year-old Justine Ker has a long list of accomplishments, from being a National Merit Scholar to getting into medical school at Tulane University.
Now she's hoping to add another to her list-- the title of Miss America 2016.
"A lot of emotions are going through my head right now, but the one big emotion now is excitement," Miss Louisiana 2016 Justine Ker said. "I think just to have friends and family here to support me as I go to Atlantic City... to have you guys here and have all of Louisiana watching and supporting me-- is a huge honor."
Ker's platform for the competition is called "A Beautiful Mind: Promoting Positive Mental Health". Through this platform, she hopes to educate people on mental health matters.
"When we think about mental health, we tend to think about mental illnesses and while that's important, we don't talk about stress management and time management and how we can take care of our mental health every single day," Ker added.
Ker said she also hopes to extinguish stereotypes about pageant competitors through this experience.
"I'm also here to prove that you can be smart, you can have a degree in neuroscience and go to medical school," she added. "You can also be Miss Louisiana and compete in Miss America because pageants aren't just about being pretty and being on a stage."
Win or lose-- this Miss America pageant contestant said she is thankful for the opportunity to represent Louisiana in this competition.
"When I compete on stage I'm bringing everything I have and I can't control what the judges think or say," Ker added. "But I can control how I perform and how I feel on stage and as long as I believe in who I am-- no matter what the outcome-- I am going to be happy."
The preliminary competition will start on Aug. 6 and run through Aug. 8. The televised finals will air Sept. 11.
