Hanoi beauty crowned Miss Vietnam 2016
A young woman hailing from Hanoi took home the crown of Miss Vietnam 2016 on Sunday after an intense grand finale in Ho Chi Minh City.
Thirty beauties across Vietnam showcased their outer and inner beauty yesterday evening in the final night of Miss Vietnam 2016, held at Phu Tho Sports Hall in District 11.
This year marks the first time after 14 years that the pageant’s grand finale has been held in Ho Chi Minh City.
Miss Vietnam is a biennial beauty pageant initiated in 1988 by Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper to improve young women’s role in national development while dignifying the country’s cultural potential, tradition and history, as well as promoting its image and people to international peers during the integration process.
This year’s contestants took part in several performances in their evening gowns, beachwear, and traditional Vietnamese dress ‘ao dai,’ before the top five were announced to enter the interview round.
After an intense four-hour long grand finale, the pageant’s highest title and US$98,000 pearl-and-sapphire crown were awarded to Hanoi-born Do My Linh, a 20-year-old undergraduate at Foreign Trade University.
Linh also took home VND500 million ($22,435) in prize money, while the first and second runners-up Ngo Thanh Thanh Tu and Huynh Thi Thuy Dung received VND300 million ($13,461) and VND200 million ($8,974) respectively.
In the interview round, Linh was asked to give her opinion on the motto of living popular with young Vietnamese, “work hard, play hard.”
The beauty said one deserves to enjoy the fruit of their work if they have given their all to their job.
Linh’s personal motto of living is, “sincerity is the key to open all hearts.”
The young woman had competed unsuccessfully in Miss Universe Vietnam 2015, where the beauty only made it to the top 15.
Sunday’s grand finale of Miss Vietnam 2016 also heated up with various performances by Vietnamese artists and South Korean pop star Bi Rain, who sang a medley of four of his hit songs.
Former Miss Vietnam Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen, who claimed the title in 2014, was not present at the show to hand over the crown to her successor due to a ban earlier this month, following her smoking scandal the previous month.
Last month, a video capturing Duyen smoking in a café went viral online, causing a wave of fierce criticism from the public, who said she ruined the image of the crown she was wearing.
The organizer of Miss Vietnam then prohibited her from appearing in this year’s pageant.
