again. Find out what it is in the video above.WATCHFormer Miss South Africa Cindy Nell-Roberts and her husband Clive Roberts, who live in Cape Town, had their holiday home on a farm at Nottingham Road in KwaZulu-Natal completely wrecked, allegedly by a former gardener last Wednesday.
Roberts, who attended King’s School in Nottingham Road and started his first business in Pietermaritzburg, said the gardener had been dismissed almost two months ago after he allegedly stabbed a neighbour’s employee during a scuffle, injuring him in the eye.
He said his sister, who lives in Durban, called last Friday and said his security company had alerted her that the power to the farm had been shut off.
“A few hours later, she called again and said various beams inside the house were going off,” said Roberts.
Ballid Security was sent out to the farm where they found the Roberts’s house completely trashed.
“All the doors and windows had been smashed, mirrors and paintings were broken, our fridge had been overturned and our microwave had been thrown across the room.”
Roberts, the owner of Cosmetix, a distributor and manufacturer of cosmetics, said it was suspected that the man had entered the property by crawling under their electric fence, wrapped in a blanket.
“We sent a message on the community monitoring group and soon a neighbour said an employee saw a man in the forest who had pointed a gun at him.
“The community then went out and cordoned off the area where the man had been seen, and waited for the dog unit and other police to arrive.”
Roberts said they found the man in the forest, “camped out” with a few stolen items, allegedly from the Roberts’s home.
He said the attack on their home seemed vengeful and vindictive.
“I think the attack on the house was for retribution. Police told us that we might have been killed if we had been in the house at the time of the break-in.
“We have only seen photographs of what the house looks like, but we have heard that he even knifed the cushions.
“I have no doubt that something awful might have happened if my wife and I were in the house with our two young children.
“It has been very scary and I don’t know what we are going to do going forward.
“I went to school in Nottingham Road and started my first business in Pietermaritzburg. The thought that we might not come back is heartbreaking. We love the Midlands,” he said.
“I would like to thank the Loteni Road WhatsApp group as well as Inspector Bailey, who has been amazing,” said Roberts.
Police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said officers were shocked at the damage wrought inside the house.
“The house was completely trashed to the value of about R200 000,” she said.
Ebrahim said the man appeared in court on Tuesday for bail proceedings, but he had declined to make the application.
