Engelina Kevichusa – The northeast beauty who almost won the Miss India crown in 1975

Every year, the participation of Northeast women in Femina Miss India contest create a lot of excitement in the northeast region as many from this region hardly get to make it to the finale due to lack of exposure. Any one making it to the final list unite the whole region of northeast.
This year, there’s a record number of Northeast women participating in Femina Miss India 2017 contest. Thanks to Femina Miss India’s initiative of #WeAreChanging. Eight women will be representing the Eight Northeast states.
The likes of Dipannita Sharma, Sonam Pachey, Akunou Khezhie, Priyadarshini Chatterjee, Jantee Hazarika, Rajkanya Baruah made us really proud and gave us an immense joy when they took part in the contest carrying the hopes and dreams of Northeast.

But long before most of us were born or maybe some of you might be a toddler, one woman had already achieved what seems to be impossible for many beauties from this region. Engelina Kevichusa from Shillong, Meghalaya in the year 1975 was adjudged 1st runner-up in Miss India contest organised by Femina Figurette in Bombay. Meenakshi Kurpad was the winner of Miss India 1975. It was only in 2016 that Priyadarshini Chatterjee from Guwahati ultimately won the Miss India crown making her the first from Northeast.
It might be 37 years since Engelina became 1st runner-up in Miss India 1975 and the eight representatives of the Northeast state will try to emulate the success of Priyadarshini, we owe a big Thank You to Engelina for bringing the region into limelight and when we look back we can feel proud about her achievement now if not during those time.
