Wurtzbach celebrates victory at home

IT was victory night all over again as Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach took her well-deserved victory walk on home ground on Thursday wearing the royal blue Albert Andrada gown, the same make-up and hairstyle she donned on her coronation night.
On her head, of course, was her sparkling $300,000 Czech-made sapphire and diamond crown.
With her signature dazzling smile, the three-time Binibining Pilipinas candidate who finally realized her dream looked every bit a queen on the sprawling stage of the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The walk, which many supporters felt was stolen from her when host Steve Harvey made the epic blunder of announcing the wrong Miss Universe, was the grand finale to Welcome Home, Miss Universe: The Grand Homecoming of Pia Wurtzbach produced by ABS-CBN, which will be aired on Sunday, January 31, on the network’s ABS-CBN’s Sunday Special.
Wurtzbach shared the spotlight with the other Filipinas who represented the nation in previous pageants, among them Simonette delos Reyes, Vida Doria, Rosemarie Brosas, Germelina Leah Padilla, Abbygale Arenas, Miriam Quiambao, Nina Ricci Alagao, Gionna Cabrera, Bianca Manalo, Maria Venus Raj and Ariella Arida.
Wurtzbach was serenaded by ABS-CBN’s leading men Sam Milby and Piolo Pascual. She looked graciously at the two heartthrobs who sang Rico Blanco’s “Your Universe,” but the audience noticed her smile to be giddier toward Milby. Later, she admitted to TV host Boy Abunda that she preferred Milby to Pascual.
This was one of the more playful parts of her one-on-one live interview with Abunda during the program, where Wurtzbach revealed that despite consecutive interviews in US for the likes of Nightline, Live! With Kelly and Michael, CNN Tonight with Don Lemon and Good Morning America, to name a few, live interviews at home still unsettle her.
“Kinakabahan pa rin ako pag dito sa Pilipinas. Siguro kasi gusto kong pagbutihin talaga, kasi alam ko na yung mga kababayan ko yung nanonood. Pag sa States parang chill lang ako. Pero pag nandito, grabe yung kaba ko palagi, hindi ko alam [I’m still nervous when it’s in the Philippines. Maybe because I really want to do well because I know that my countrymen are watching. When in the US, it’s chill, but here, I’m always nervous, I don’t know why),” she confessed.

What was also interesting was the portion about President Benigno Aquino 3rd, who was rumored to have dated the 26-year old beauty queen.
Did they talk about personal matters during her courtesy call at Malacañang on Tuesday?
“No. Because my mom was sitting beside me,” Wurtzbach jokingly answered.

“Kidding aside, no,” she added. “I’m very natural with him, I just asked him what his plans were with the days remaining before he finishes his term and then what he plans to do after, kung magpapahinga ba siya [if he planned on resting].
“I also asked him about what he thought of my answer during the Q&A. He said that, ‘When you sparked the comments of the leftist, then you know, you did something right’,” Wurtzbach continued, referring to her pageant answer regarding US military presence in the country.
The President in turn asked the beauty queen how true it was that she planned to run for public office someday as she told Senate President Frank Drilon. “He advised, ‘I think you should rethink about it five times.’ [It was a] very light conversation.”
“I always thought he was a good leader with good governance, I told him that.”
The right time, at the right place
Former Miss Universe Margie Moran also took the stage and spoke highly of the country’s newest source of pride in her prepared message.
“She was at the right time and at the right place in Las Vegas. It came during a time that she was more mature, because she has a gift that came with her experiences in life–growing up, working, being a breadwinner. She speaks with wisdom, and, I think, that also gives her the confidence. Loving whatever she does and helping different advocacies give her very good qualities in representing our country, the Philippines, this day.”
