Teddy Boy on Pia’s political dreams: ‘Save us from ugly people’

Veteran journalist and former politician Teddy Boy Locsin Jr. has expressed support for the political aspirations of reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo-Wurtzbach.
In a tweet Tuesday, Locsin, who served several terms as Makati City representative, urged the Filipino titleholder to seek public office.
“Yes, Pia go into politics. Save us from all the ugly people in public office today,” Locsin said.
Locsin was reacting to Wurtzbach’s declaration to Sen. President Franklin Drilon last Monday when she visited the Senate to receive a resolution congratulating her for winning the prestigious beauty pageant. Wurtzbach, the Philippines’ third Miss Universe, ended a 42-year title drought for the country.
Drilon said Wurtzbach told her that she wanted to be a politician.
The Senate president said he was not surprised by Wurtzbach’s statement, noting the beauty queen’s “politically conscious” answers in the Miss Universe 2015 coronation night.
In the pageant’s question and answer portion, Wurtzbach said she saw nothing wrong with US military presence in the Philippines and voiced her advocacy for HIV/AIDS awareness.
“I advised her that if she’s really interested in joining government, to try first her hand in some appointive positions where she can push her advocacies rather than join politics,” Drilon said.
Locsin praised Wurtzbach’s humility in handling all the attention she has been getting, as evidenced by the people who flocked to the streets of the metropolis for her grand homecoming parade last Monday.
“What happens when a celebrity is nice and not a mean bitch: an outpouring of affection rather than derision,” he said.
Wurtzbach is in the country for a week-long series of activities, including her parade last Monday, courtesy calls on government officials, a charity event, and a tribute show at the Araneta Center in Quezon City. YG/RAM
