She is a daredevil, confident and has passion for the uplift of society. Meet 20-year-old Navpreet Kaur, a glamour diva hailing from a nondescript village Ittan-Baddi near Adampur.
Daughter of a Punjab Police ASI Sukhchain Kaur and head constable Gurvinder Singh, Navpreet was amongst the top five contestants in the Miss India pageant held last year. This year, too, the girl worked very hard on her grooming and communication and is all set to floor the judges in the most-coveted contest in the country.
“I was only five-year-old when I saw popular Hindi soap ‘Banungi Mein Miss India’ on television at home. Beautiful girls clad in bright clothes appeared to me like fairies from heaven and since then, I cherished a dream to be one like them. I not only dreamt but also worked hard to turn this into a reality,” said Navpreeet, a student of KMV College in the city.
What went wrong last time? “At such a prestigious contest where the competition is intense with other top beauties handpicked from across the country by some of the renowned names of India and international fashion industry, it is difficult to say what went wrong. However, I have actually improved upon all aspects once again and even took professional grooming classes in Pune,” said the fashion diva.
What next? “This time, the organisers have made some changes in the pageant. One girl from each state will be chosen and will compete for the coveted crown. Presently, auditions for North India are going on and I, along with two more girls from Punjab, was chosen for the Miss Punjab contest to be held on April 15. The one who will win the contest will get an entry to the Miss India pageant to be held in Mumbai in June this year,” said Navpreet.
Who remains her close aide during all this time? “My mother is my best friend and a close confidant. Even though she is not much qualified and has not got any opportunity to prove herself in her field, she remained my biggest support during all these years. I come from a lower middle class family and my parents are ‘suffering’ a lot to fulfill my dreams. I wish I get a chance to provide them a life of their dreams,” said Kaur.
If she wins the crown, what change she would like to bring in society? “Although the crown looks very dazzling from a distance, it comes with a lot of responsibilities for the one who wears it. If I happen to win it, I would like to do something for the rural women of India. Even though they are highly talented and hardworking, their efforts are not recognised well by our society,” said Kaur who herself hails from a remote village in Jalandhar.
Anything she misses due to her strict dieting regime? ‘Oh yes! I miss jalebis a lot and have told my family that if I managed to win the crown, they should first offer me jalebies as sweet at the venue,” giggled the young girl.
Any message to young girls of Punjab? “All I want to say is that it doesn’t matter who you are and where you come from and also whether you have enough resources to fulfill your dreams. All that matters is your determination and passion to fulfill your aim,” signs off the glamour diva.
