Miss Universe contestants arrive in Las Vegas as pageant to crown the world's most beautiful woman begins
The 81 ladies who will battle it out for the crown gave a big, glitzy hello before the glamorous contest begins
Peace signs, tiaras, a lot of lipstick and bouffant hair steamrolled into Las Vegas as this year's Miss Universe pageant descended on the city of extremes.
The 81 ladies who will battle it out for the crown gave a big, glitzy hello before the glamorous contest begins on December 20.
Taking centre stage was last year's winner, Colombia's Paulina Vega , 22, who posed dramatically in a figure-hugging gold dress, making sure everyone knew who was queen bee.
Miss Vega is only the second woman from Colombia to win the crown in the competition's 63-year history.
Her success led to street celebrations in her home country and a national holiday was created in her honour.
Among the hopeful contestants was fellow Colombian 21-year-old Ariadna Gutierrez Aréval who posed for the cameras making a peace sign.
But Miss Aréval faces stiff competition from the fierce competitors who are all desperate to take that crown home.
Britain's entry is Narissara Nena France, a British-Thai model from London.
According to her biography on the Miss Universe website, she "is a sweet, genuine young woman with a laid-back attitude" but her friends describe her as "awkward and reserved".
She "understands differences in culture and traditions" thanks to being brought up with parents from both Britain and Thailand, her profile reads.
And "she isn't afraid of hard work and sleepless nights. She is a keen adventurer and wants nothing more than to see the world and take herself out of her comfort zone."
Every year nearly 10,000 young women apply to take part in the competition.
The Miss Universe pageant, a rival to Miss World, Miss Earth and Miss International contests, was founded in 1952.

Delegates have to participate in swimsuit and evening gown competitions, but the organisers insist the contest looks at more than just beauty and contestants must prove themselves intelligent, well-mannered and cultured.
The winner is assigned a one-year contract with the Miss Universe Organization, going overseas to spread messages about the control of diseases, peace, and public awareness of AIDS.
