The 81 Miss Universe Pageant contestants led by reigning queen Paulina Vega of Colombia shed their glamorous looks over the weekend for hairnets and sweats to package 15,000 fortified rice-soy meals for Stop Hunger Now. Here’s Richard Corey’s YouTube video of the process.
In an assembly line in a Planet Hollywood conference center meeting hall, they packaged rice, soy flour, dried vegetables and a micronutrient blend of vitamins and minerals into plastic bags that boiled in water serve six people. The ladies packed 300 boxes in all, and every time they reached 1,000 meals, they got to bang a gong to celebrate.
Stop Hunger Now is a global hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. Packages will go to Central America and Southeast Asia and emergency disaster relief in the USA.
It was the second charitable effort for the Miss Universe contestants since arriving in Las Vegas. I joined them at Opportunity Village for their national gift auction. Here’s Richard Corey’s YouTube video at O.V.
Each contestant brought a gift from her country that was donated to a silent auction to benefit our beloved charity Opportunity Village. Miss USA Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma brought an autographed Toby Keith guitar that sold quickly for the $6,000 price.
For the first time in the 65-year-history of Miss Universe, Diamonds International Corp., who manufactures the pageant crowns, was authorized to produce a one-of-a-kind spherical glass watch with 12 diamonds to mark time. Designed by Czech studio designer Olgoj Chorchoj, it will remain the only one in the world.
I was asked to auction the timepiece, and in spirited bidding it sold for $3,000 to Marilynn Mack, daughter of Thomas & Mack Center founder Jerome Mack .
While there, I met with Miss Spain Carla Barber Garcia and Miss Portugal Emilia Araujo. They stunned me when I learned that they are medical specialists. Emilia will return to Lisbon after Las Vegas to start her doctor duties after six years of medical training.
Carla is already a plastic surgeon — not cosmetics — helping restore burn victims and disfigured patients. Neither is scared of blood in the operating room.
Here is Richard Corey’s YouTube video of my interviews with Miss USA, a former Zappos model who is aiming for a full-time Hollywood movie career. I also talked with Miss Spain, Miss Portugal and Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization.
Paula revealed that this year’s pageant telecast will be a three-hour event and feature a new stage “that will make Las Vegas very proud.” Telecast producer R.A. Clark told me that the emphasis will be much more on the fashion beauty of the contestants, and he’s built model runways out from the stage into Axis at Planet Hollywood.
“These are the most stunning girls in the world,” he said. “We’re going to present them in a way that hasn’t been done before. It will be the most fantastic fashion show you’ve ever seen anywhere.”
Paula added: “It’s a totally new-look pageant — very modern, very expensive. Totally ramped up and amped up. There will be a lot of Las Vegas in the show. We now have time to tell the incredible stories of these girls. People think they are just beautiful, but we have some very powerful, brainy girls.
“They are also incredibly adventurous — very smart. This year we have time to tell their unbelievable stories. We have lawyers among the girls, 13 are trilingual, and you’ve just met two surgeons from Spain and Portugal.
“It’s been a crazy year for us in having the company sold by Donald Trump to new owners. We also have a new broadcaster in Fox, so we are thrilled to be back in Las Vegas. It’s always a great place for us, so when Miss Universe is over, we’ll start planning where Miss USA will be held.
“Planet Hollywood, our host hotel, has a special place in my heart. You know I am a big fan of Las Vegas, and it’s highly possible that we could bring Miss USA back to Las Vegas again.”
