Normanby secretary set to wow at national beauty pageant final
Ailish Shaw is lining up for the final of Miss Universe Great Britain and the chance to take on the world
A stunner from Teesside is set to strut her stuff at one of the UK’s biggest beauty pageants.
Ailish Shaw has reached the final of Miss Universe Great Britain in July - and is the first to represent Teesside in six years.
If selected, the 23-year-old from Normanby will then go on to the international final which attracts half a billion viewers every year.
Ailish is no stranger to beauty pageants - she held the title of Miss Tees Valley 2014/15.
And the secretary, who works at North Ormesby Health Village and is also director of the Top Model of Sunderland competition, said she was delighted to be representing the area again.
“I applied online and then I had interviews in Leeds,” she said.
“I couldn’t believe I got through because there are hundreds and hundreds of applications.
“I’m really excited to be representing Teesside. I’m very proud of my area.
“Usually it’s girls from the big cities so it’s great that smaller towns are being represented.
“Miss Universe is one of the biggest pageants in the world and I think it’s going to be a huge adventure as well as a lot of fun.”
Sponsored by Infinity Brand Management, Ailish will be one of around 40 women taking part in the final in Cardiff, south Wales.
As well as getting the opportunity to represent the UK at Miss Universe later this year, the GB winner will also visit India to support the Sheroes Hangout initiative which helps women who have been the victim of acid attacks.
In addition, she will receive an extensive prize package including a wardrobe of designer clothing and jewellery.
Cheering on Ailish at the final will be her mum and dad Sharon and David Shaw, her boyfriend Sam Gowland and possibly her brother Danny, 27, if he can take time from his job in the Royal Navy.
“They always come to support me,” said Ailish.
“Hopefully Danny will be able to come too but if not I’m sure he will be watching online.”
Ailish, a former Eston Park School pupil and Middlesbrough College student, has been set a series of challenges in the run-up to the show.
This includes fundraising for Strongbones - a charity which helps children from all over the UK with diseases of the bone.
On June 5, she will be taking part in the Middlesbrough 5K.
