Camille Sims crowned Miss New York 2016
Is Camille Sims the next Miss America?
We won’t know until Sept. 11, when ABC televises the pageant
competition and crowning. Sims will be among the contestants, having
been crowned Miss New York 2016
following pageantry on Sunday. Sims entered the state pageant after
winning the Miss Pride of New York Pageant. Her talent is as a vocalist,
and her pageant platform is “Fighting Hunger and Homelessness.”
Contestants are judged in the categories of talent, evening
gown, swimsuit and responses to interview questions. Winners at local,
state and national levels in the Miss America Organization earn scholarships and campaign on behalf of personal and official pageant charities and causes.
Six women who reigned as Miss New York
have gone on to be crowned Miss America. They are Miss New York 2015
Kira Kazantsev, Miss New York 2014 Nina Davuluri, Miss New York 2013
Mallory Hagan, Miss New York 1984 Vanessa Williams, Miss New York 1976
Tawny Godin and Miss New York 1945 Bess Myerson.
Also crowned on Sunday was Miss New York’s Outstanding Teen 2016 Lauryn Whitfield.
She will travel to Orlando, Florida this summer to compete in the Miss
America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. New York began participating in the
teen pageant in 2005. Maria DeSantis is the only New Yorker to win the
national title, being crowned Miss America’s Outstanding Teen 2006.
Like older contestants in the Miss America Pageant, the
teens compete for scholarships and participate in local, state and
national charitable causes. Teen contestants are ages 13-17 and compete
in the categories of interview, talent, evening gown and sportswear.
