Edmonton student competing in Miss Universe Canada 2016

A University of Alberta student who wants to help young people achieve their goals is one of a dozen Alberta contestants in this year’s Miss Universe Canada competition.
Third-year arts student Vibhu Kher, 20, said Sunday she has been interested in the pageant since she was a child, but this is the first time she has taken part — she was selected following an interview.
“There are so many children who don’t have the resources to be something or get somewhere. I want to be a voice for those people.”
Although half the points in the event, which starts June 9 in Toronto, are allotted in the bikini and evening gown competitions, Kher said the approximately 60 finalists are also judged on an interview and their charitable fundraising.
“I think beauty pageants have evolved a lot … All of these 60 girls all embrace their own look, they all embrace their own style,” she said.
“No one is forced to wear something, no one is forced to do something.”
The pageant’s other contestants who come from the Edmonton area include Richa Kalra, Natalie Zaiffdeen, Medina Bandalli, Jada Hong and Brianne Kidner.
The winner will represent Canada in the Miss Universe pageant later this year.
