Donald Trump has never owned the Miss America Organization
Donald Trump’s name may always be linked with the Miss America Organization, but only because members of the news media and a number of bloggers continue to give readers the wrong information. The latest case in point is an article published today by Politico, which quotes one of Trump’s critics as saying, “He got kicked out of his own Miss America pageant. I mean, come on.”
Well, come on, media fact-checkers and bloggers. Trump is a former owner of the Miss Universe Organization, which in turn owns the Miss USA Pageant (not Miss America) and the Miss Teen USA Pageant (not the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant). He has never held any stake in the Miss America Organization. As is the case with Trump’s other rivals, he had a tendency to take verbal pokes at Miss America.
Trump co-owned the Miss Universe Organization with NBC Universal. After Trump made controversial statements about immigrants from Mexico, NBC refused to air the pageants. This resulted in litigation. Eventually, Trump briefly owned the entire Miss Universe system, and sold it to WME/IMG. Arguably, the pageant is now in the best hands possible. The “WME” in the company name is William Morris Endeavor, which has been one of the largest and most-successful talent agencies in the history of entertainment. You would recognize the names of hundreds of entertainers it has represented over the past century or so. With its acquisition of IMG, it has grown even stronger. Its expansion into sports has been massive.
