Pia Wurtzbach ‘bittersweet’ as she passes crown on Sunday
An emotional Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach said that it was “bittersweet” for her to crown her successor in the Binibining Pilipinas 2016 pageant on Sunday, April 17, 2016.
“I still have butterflies in my stomach every time I come here. Even when I came home from my homecoming, I was still nervous. And you know what right now, as I was about to pass on the crown to my successor, after I worked so hard for three years, I still get nervous. It means so such to me. It’s really bittersweet,” said Wurtzbach, during a press conference held at the Novotel in Cubao, Quezon City.
“Now it’s time to pass on the crown to my successor who will wear the sash of Miss Philippines. But once a Binibini is always a Binibini,” said Wurtzbach, who won the Binibining Pilipinas contest on her third attempt in 2015.
Stella Marquez Araneta, chairperson of Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc., said that she knew Wurtzbach would standout as a hardworking Binibini.
“I remember that time when she asked my permission to stay behind because she wanted to watch the tapes of Miss Universe contests. She’s really worked hard from the start,” said Mrs. Araneta, who just arrived from Colombia.
40 girls are competing in this year’s edition of the beauty pageant. Wurtzbach will also serve as one of the judges during the coronation night.
Sources said that Wurtzbach will stay in the Philippines until Tuesday, April 19. After that she will fly to Peru to crown the winner of 2016 Miss Universe Peru.
Before Wurtzbach attended the press conference, she met boxing champ Manny Pacquiao for the first time after his victory parade at the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City.
The two world champions chatted for awhile and posed for photos at the same hotel where Pacquiao and his entourage stopped to have lunch.
“I always admire Manny Pacquiao as a boxer. I reminded him that I was the one who tweeted that I promised to get the crown in Miss Universe after he lost to Floyd Mayweather, Jr.,” Wurtzbach said.
In May 2015, the Filipino-German beauty queen tweeted: “Kalma lang guys!! Babawi tayo sa Miss Universe!”
Pacquiao arrived in the country on Thursday, April 14, following his successful bout against American Timothy Bradley, Jr., in Las Vegas last April 10.
