Pia Wurtzbach believes winning the crown involves ‘destiny’
It's an evening when a young girl's dream becomes a reality—and, out of the spotlight, it's also an evening when hopes are dashed.
Out of the 40 candidates in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, only one goes home with the chance to represent the Philippines in the Miss Universe pageant.
Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach fell short once—nay, twice before she went home with the crown and she has always been vocal about what the experience taught her. Aside from being pretty, Wurtzbach said that her successor should be as hungry as she was for the crown.
"It has to be something that she really wants," she told the press at Novotel on Thursday, April 14.
But Wurtzbach also acknowledged that a bit of luck goes a long way in the pageant. After all, she was just one of 80 during in Miss Universe and every single woman on the stage was just as determined as she was to win.
Wurtzbach revealed that Paula Shugart, president of the Miss Universe organization, feels for all of the candidates and it pains her to see all but one go home empty handed.
When the 80 candidates met Shugart for the first time, she told them, "You should all be proud of yourselves, because you won in your country. You are already the best—in this room are the best girls from all over the world. But unfortunately, there will only be one winner."
"Whoever Miss Universe is going to be, that's her destiny," Shugart said.
Wurtzbach relayed the same to the beauty queen competing in the Binibining Pilipinas pageant, "It's a combination of all things: Your determination, your hard work, your perseverance. Of course, your beauty comes with it, your confidence, your grace—how you handle yourself, how you answer questions...and also, how the stars align for you."
