How Donald Trump Treats Women in Private
A new feature from The New York Times exposes a history of objectification.
MORE FROM COSMOPOLITAN
On Saturday, the New York Times published an in-depth look into business mogul and presidential candidate Donald Trump's long and complicated history with women. The piece was based on more than 50 interviews over the course of six weeks, and included quotes from women that Trump has worked with, dated, or simply been acquainted with in some other capacity.
Based on the accounts of these people, Trump is described as someone who has always objectified women, and who seems obsessed with surrounding himself with women he believes live up to his standards of beauty. In the workplace, he's said to be more than willing to hire women — but only because he believes they worked harder than men in order to "prove" something, and he's apparently far from shy about expressing his opinions about their physical appearances.
For his part, Trump has denied a lot of the claims — arguing the stories are exaggerated. (He has also refuted the Times piece specifically in a series of tweets written on Sunday afternoon.) But embellished or not, here are a few of the worst stories from the piece; and for the rest, check out the entire article over at the New York Times.
When he forced a woman to try on a bikini then model it for his friends
For a brief period of time in the early '90s, Trump dated then-26-year-old model Brewer Lane. The pair had first met at pool party Trump was throwing at Mar-a-Lago, his estate in Key West, Florida. Lane hadn't come with the intention of actually swimming there, so Trump brought her into his mansion and into a room with a drawer full of swimsuits, and asked her to put one on. He then took her back out to pool area and proceeded to show her off, calling her a "Trump girl."
His obsession with whether or not women are "10"s
Based on the piece, Trump was obsessed with dating beautiful women as early as high school. He was voted "Ladies' Man" of his grade and was known for dating a variety of gorgeous and stylish women. Multiple people who knew him from then until now went on to confirm that he was always very anxious about whether or not the women he was dating were "10"s — because he wouldn't want to be seen with anyone less.
When he allegedly introduced himself to pageant contestants by kissing them on the lips
During the 1997 Miss USA pageant, Temple Taggart (at the time, 21-year-old Miss Utah) alleges that Trump introduced himself to her and other contestants with a kiss on the lips.
"I thought, 'Oh my God, gross,'" Taggart told the Times. "He was married to Marla Maples at the time. I think there were a few other girls that he kissed on the mouth. I was like, 'Wow, that's inappropriate.'"
When he held a big meeting and only wanted people to see his "best looking" female employees
One time during a meeting, former employee Barbara A. Res asked one of the women in the office to get everyone's lunch orders. Before she could go, Trump stepped in and chose a different female employee to take the orders.
"That was purely about looks," Res told the Times. "He wanted the people in that room to think that all the women who worked for him were beautiful."
That time he needed confirmation that his then-teenage daughter, Ivanka, was attractive
Trump has said some troubling things about his daughter in the past, but perhaps one of the more notable times was when Ivanka helped to host the 1997 Miss Teen USA pageant.
"'Don't you think my daughter's hot? She's hot, right?'," Brook Antoinette Mahealani Lee, who had been Miss Universe at the time, recalled him saying. "I was like, 'Really?' That's just weird. She was 16. That's creepy."
When he mocked his female coworkers' appearance
Allegedly, Trump has told multiple female coworkers "you like your candy" in order to imply that they'd gained weight. (Trump, for his part, has denied this, saying it was made up and that he has great respect for women.)
And when he publicly shamed a former Miss Universe for gaining weight
One of the stories Trump willingly owned up to, however, might just be the most horrific: After 1996 Miss Universe Alicia Machado gained some weight after winning the title, Trump publicly shamed her for it. According to Machado, she had gone to the president of the Miss Universe organization to ask for time to get herself back on track. They agreed, and brought her to New York — and when they brought her to the gym the next day, she was met by over 90 media outlets taking her photograph.
"I was about to cry in that moment with all the cameras there," Machado told the Times. "I said, 'I don't want to do this, Mr. Trump.' He said, 'I don't care.'"
