Duterte supportive of PHL's hosting of 2016 Miss Universe pageant — Pia Wurtzbach

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach joined the Philippines' Department of Tourism (DOT) in assuring the public that the next Miss Universe pageant will happen in the Philippines.
In a series of tweets, Wurtzbach declared that President Rodrigo Duterte supports the idea of hosting the coronation night in the Philippines on January 30, 2017.
Wurtzbach recalled that she and the president first discussed the possibility of the Philippines hosting the 65th Miss Universe pageant when she paid a courtesy call on Duterte in Malacañan Palace last July.
She remarked that the Miss Universe pageant will boost Philippine tourism.
The reigning Miss Universe also commented that the president "very much a gentleman" when she paid a visit to the Palace.
Amid rumors that the Philippines will no longer be hosting the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, Wurtzbach assured the public that she will fight for it.

DOT wants to ‘keep politics out of Miss Universe pageant’

It's been an interesting few days when it comes to news about the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines, with the Department of Tourism fighting rumors of its cancellation and women's rights advocates creating a petition to hold the competition somewhere else.
Following the DOT's statement that the pageant will indeed be held in the Philippines on January 30, the petition—signed by over 150 people as of posting time—began circulating online Monday.
"Why hold a pageant about beauty, female beauty specifically, in a country where women are insulted, denigrated, verbally abused if not (physically) abused, by people who are in power?" Black and White Movement convener Navarro said in an interview with GMA News' Balitanghali.
In response, the DOT said that they are focusing on "happiness."
"We just want to keep the politics side of it all outside the event. We would like to concentrate on the happiness and at the same time the increase in tourist arrivals that this event would bring," Tourism undersecretary Kat De Castro told GMA News' Balitanghali.
Beyond concerns about purported "political instability," the petitioners argued that the fundamental reason against holding the pageant in the Philippines is the "objectionable, scandalous, and demeaning sexist attitude demonstrated by the newly elected leaders of our country, by no less than President Rodrigo Duterte, and his cohorts towards womankind."
"To hold the Miss Universe Pageant in the Philippines at this time would serve as a reward of this intolerable behavior and excuse such behavior. It would reinforce a troubling trend in our society. It would make your organization a partner to these backward and dangerous steps which are serious violations of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)," the letter concludes.
The petition is signed by former Social Welfare and Development secretary Dinky Soliman, former cabinet secretary Ging Delez, former Commission on Human Rights chair Etta Rosales, and Aurora Pijuan of the Gising Barangay Movement, among others.
The DOT has repeatedly stated that the coronation night for the Miss Universe pageant will be held in the Philippines.  Aya Tantiangco/BM, GMA News

Miriam Quiambao: Miss Universe in PHL good for tourism, women empowerment

After the creation of a petition against the staging of the next Miss Universe pageant in the Philippines, 1999 first runner-up Miriam Quiambao said the competition might actually be good for women's empowerment in the country.
"I'd like to think that Filipinos give women high regard in this country, especially since the Philippines is very maternal in nature, in our culture," the beauty queen said in an interview on Tuesday. "I think a lot of women here are being respected and being held in high regard. There are a lot of advocacies for women empowerment."
However, Quiambao added, "Sadly, we have heard of stories and quotations of disrespect from certain leaders in this country. I am very saddened by this. In fact, I chose not to elect certain officials just because of what they have said in the past against women."
Women's rights advocates recently posted a petition online, calling on the Miss Universe Organization "to reconsider" their decision to hold the pageant in the Philippines and denouncing President Rodrigo Duterte "and his cohorts" for the "objectionable, scandalous, and demeaning sexist attitude" they demonstrate "towards womankind."
Quiambao said of the advocates, “Naiintindihan ko ang side nila, but instead of trying to stop this, why don't we just focus on what we want? A lot of success speakers and advocates say that—focus on what you want. So what it is that we really want? We want women to be held in high respect, to be empowered, to be educated. Why don't we focus on that instead? The more we focus on what we want, the more likely that we will achieve it.”
Quiambao said that the Miss Universe pageant is not just about "women in skimpy bikinis."
“[I]t is actually an opportunity and a platform for them to engage the audience and get them involved in their own personal advocacies,” she said.

Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo in a report by GMA News' Balitanghali previously said thatpreparation for the pageant is on track.
"I'd like to assure you that Miss Universe will be here, the contest will be here on January 30," Teo declared.
The candidates are expected to arrive on January 13, weeks ahead of the coronation night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
According to the DOT, the candidates will visit different parts of the Philippines in groups. Among the potential places to be visited by the country representatives are Intramuros, Batangas, Palawan, Legazpi, Cebu, and Davao. — BM, GMA News
