Zun Than Sin, a 21-year-old music graduate from Yangon’s University of Arts and Culture, was crowned Miss Universe Myanmar 2017 Thursday night, taking home a cash prize of 10,000,000 kyats (Bt300,000).

She looks up to Myanmar's State Councilor and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi as her idol, wants an end to the war within Myanmar and hopes to see peace return to her homeland. The fourth edition of the annual beauty pageant was held at the Novotel Yangon Max with a group of leading Thai journalists flown in by Thailand's BSC cosmetics brand, one of the pageant's sponsors, to cover the event.

"I love her very much. She's my idol. She's very smart and has made the best for my country,'' she told The Nation before the 3-hour pageant started.

In a country where most women cover up the lower half of their bodies with the longyi (the tubular skirt), the sight of the scantily clad contestants flashing the flesh in bikinis on national television is likely to ruffle a few feathers in the conservative quarters.

But Myanmar is changing fast. So is its ladies. Zun Than Sin hadcompeted infour beauty contests in Myanmar and South Korea since 2014 before signing up for the Miss Universe Myanmar 2017 (sic).

"I took part in the Asia New Star Model Contest in South Korea in 2014. Then later that year I ended up among the top five in the final of the Miss Universe Myanmar beauty pageant. There were two more contests a little later. These contests have given me the opportunity to improve myself," she said.

ChintanaChalermchaikit, International Marketing Manager of the BSC brand, said the newly crowned beauty queen got the looks that won the hearts of the judging panel.

"She's the best in terms of skin, body and height. Her English is quite good too. So to my mind, she looks international, which is quite important," Chintana said.

Zun Than Sin also took home two other titles: Miss Healthy Skin and Miss Famous, which came with a cash prize of K1,000,000 each.

The first runner-up was ShweEainSi, a 20-year-old mathematics major fromthe University of Yangon.
