WESTERN BUREAU:
Eighteen young women from the western end of the island were presented to Montegonians at the inaugural sashing of Miss Universe Jamaica North West at Tropical Bliss Beach in the Second City on Monday night.
Aimed at promoting young women's involvement in issues of community development, franchise holder, Michelle Parkes of Bright Sparkes Etiquette and Grooming, said her goal is to promote values of self-esteem and confidence in the young women.
"Participating in pageants helps young women to develop their interview skills, public-speaking abilities and poise, which can help them throughout their lives," Parkes told the gathering of sponsors and well-wishers who turned out for the event even with the rains threatening to derail her plans.
With the grand final set for June 25, the Miss Universe Jamaica North West contestants will make a series of public appearances, charity visits and media interaction, in advance.
Confident Of Success
Parkes is confident one of her girls could walk away with the national crown, noting that at least two Miss Universe Jamaica have come from Montego Bay Carolyn Yapp and Angelie Martin.
"I have no doubt that Montego Bay will rise to the occasion again this year," she confidently noted .
