A beauty queen is headed for Wythe County. Victoria Mendoza, Miss World America, will visit the area Memorial Day weekend, May 27-29. While in town, she will greet fans at a local dress shop and at the Wythe Raceway, pose for a photo shoot, and make a cooking video.
Her first stop will be at That’s My Dress Bridal and Prom on Commonwealth Boulevard across from Walmart on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. While there, she will visit with customers and sign autographs.
Shop owner Tracie La Turno is Mendoza’s wardrobe stylist, providing gowns for the pageant queen’s various appearances.
“Victoria just happened to come into our Fredericksburg store one day,” La Turno said, adding that the pageant director referred Mendoza to the store. That was when Mendoza was Miss Arizona, before winning the national crown.
Having beauty queens and contestants drop by the store is not uncommon, La Turno said.
“We are actually the wardrobe stylist for many pageant girls,” she said. “They are always looking for a great gown and will travel to stores to them. They will travel all over the place to find the right one; it’s serious business, what they do.”
Miss World America is one of the oldest pageants in the country. It is the official pageant that has selected contestants from the United States to compete for Miss World since 1951. Former Miss World America winners include television’s Wonder Woman Linda Carter in 1972 and Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry in 1986.
On Saturday, May 28, Mendoza will head to the Fort Chiswell Mansion, where she will star in a photo shoot. Also on hand to participate in the shoot will be Wythe Raceway drivers Sam Peak (No. 88) and Lindsay Mc Mahan (No. 34). She will also be featured in a cooking demonstration video with Key Ingredients Restaurant Chef Chris Disibbio. Mendoza will have another photo shoot at the Bolling Wilson Hotel during the weekend.
La Turno said that magazines often publish the photographs. This month, Mendoza is on the cover of Virginia Bride magazine. Several local businesses, including Coulter’s Florist and Restoration Salon and Spa, will contribute to the photo shoot.
“We like to use local businesses because it’s nice to work as a team and create a really nice project,” La Turno added.
Then, on Sunday evening, Mendoza will appear at Wythe Raceway and ride in the pace car.
“I want to show her what Wytheville is like and what small town America is like,” La Turno said.
