The Sheboygan teen crowned Miss Wisconsin USA last September is heading out to Vegas to compete for the Miss USA crown.
Kate Redeker, 19, a graduate of Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School, was crowned Miss Wisconsin USA 2016 last September. She previously had been crowned Miss Wisconsin Teen USA in 2013.
Contestants from 50 states and District of Columbia, in addition to the winner of the #FindingMiss52 social contest, will compete onstage for the chance to win the title of Miss USA 2016 and the crown on June 5.
When asked what her goals are for the upcoming competition, Redeker said her ideal would obviously be to secure the Miss USA crown, but either way, she is happy with all of her recent success.
"Just representing Wisconsin on the Miss USA stage is a win in my book," she said.
Interestingly enough, Redeker did not grow up entering pageants. In high school, she started seeing pageant ads on Facebook and decided to sign up on a whim, which ultimately was the start of her journey. "It's definitely a bit humorous how it all started," Redeker said with a laugh.
To any young women or girls who are considering entering pageants, Redeker said they should give it a try.
"I never expected to gain this much confidence in myself," Redeker said. "I mean, you're walking in front of thousands wearing just a swimsuit and heels. If you can do that, you can do anything; that confidence is something no one can ever take from me."
An avid volunteer, she has spent numerous weekends traveling to states such as Texas, North Carolina, New York, Florida and Colorado to participate in one of her favorite charitable efforts — the USO’s Operation That’s My Dress, through which designer Sherri Hill’s formal gowns are donated to military teens and wives, as well as women who serve.
"It's a way to say thank you for all that they do and to honor their femininity," Redeker said.
Redeker especially enjoys making connections with the daughters and spouses of servicemen and honoring them as well because "they don't always get recognized."
Other charities that are close to Redeker's heart are breast cancer and multiple sclerosis awareness efforts, but she is always willing to lend a helping hand whenever an organization or charity comes calling because she loves volunteering.
Not since 1974, when Mary Lynn Cook took second runner-up in the Miss USA pageant, has a Miss Wisconsin USA title holder placed in the top three at the national level. The highest-placing Teen contestant was Vanessa Semrow who won Miss Teen USA in 2002. Other than that, no one from Wisconsin has placed in the top three in the Teen division at the national level.
The 2016 Miss USA Pageant airs live on FOX at 6 p.m., June 5, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
