♫ Finally, it's happened to me ♫ is Australia's theme song RN on account of Magnolia Maymuru being selected as the first Indigenous woman to represent NT at the Miss World Australia finals. Yes. Queen.
19-year-old ledge Magnolia lives in the remote community of Yirrkala in Arnhem Land where she works as a sports and recreation officer for kids. Unsurprisingly, she's been scouted a bunch of times and now that she's graduated from school she's keen to try her hand at modelling.
"I thought — I'm a woman just like everybody else. If people don't accept me just because I'm Indigenous or from community, it won't bother me. There's plenty other industries, people and companies to look to," Magnolia told the ABC.
As part of her pageantry duties, Magnolia took part in a charity event this week where she spoke on her dedication to changing perceptions about her community:
"I wanted to break the cycle of how people see life back in community… I hope it gives [people] a push to look at more women up in Arnhem Land. I hope it gives them an urge to come up and actually check people out rather than thinking, 'There's one and that's enough'."
Oath.
The Miss World Australia finals take place in July this year, with the Miss World finals to follow in London, and we'll be keeping everything crossed for Magnolia until then.
