The Hoopeston Jaycees have decided to move forward with plans to present the National Sweetheart Pageant this year.
Pageant Co-Executive Director Michelle Crabtree announced late on Thursday via the pageant’s Facebook page that the final decision to move forward with the pageant had been made.
“The Hoopeston Jaycees are pleased to announce a final decision has been made to continue the tradition of hosting a National Sweetheart Pageant in this year's 73rd National Sweetcorn Festival over Labor Day Weekend,” the post read.
Crabtree said specific details regarding the pageant will be released in the coming weeks, though she did explain that the application process will open on May 15.
Crabtree expressed her appreciation to all those who have shown support for the pageant in recent weeks.
“We want to thank everyone who has supported us throughout these past few difficult months and ask for your patience and understanding during the restructure and development of our 2016 pageant,” she said in her post.
Commenting on the announcement, National Sweetcorn Festival organizers said “We can't have ‘Sweetcorn and Sweethearts’ for our theme and not have a pageant..we are thrilled to announce the National Sweetheart Pageant will stay a tradition in Hoopeston!”
This situation was brought about after the Miss America Organization began enforcing a rule in February that prohibited Miss America Organization contestants and judges from taking part in the National Sweetheart Pageant.
While the pageant had never been a part of the Miss America Organization, it did follow the organization’s rules and judging protocols and relied on runners-up from each state pageant to serve as contestants.
We’ll update this story more information about the pageant as it becomes available.
