A Reno high school student will travel to Florida in August to represent Nevada in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. Heather Renner earned the Miss Nevada's Outstanding Teen crown Friday afternoon during a pageant held in Las Vegas. The teen pageant is for girls ages 13-17 and is the younger-sister competition within the Miss America Organization. Like Miss America contestants, they compete for scholarships and other honors.
Heather attends Damonte Ranch High School in Reno. She is a singer and a mental health advocate. Heather has a particular fondness for opera. She earned her way to the state pageant by winning the Miss Pleasant Valley’s Outstanding Teen Pageant. She is also aformer Truckee Meadows Outstanding Teen.
If Renner wins the national pageant, she will become the first contestant from Nevada to wear the national crown, but Nevada contestants have a long history of success at the national level. Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen 2015 Katherine Kelley placed in the top 10 at last year’s pageant, and won the People’s Choice Award. Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen 2014 Amy Smith earned both the national Spirit of America and Teens in Action awards. Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen 2012 Ellie Smith finished in the top 10 in the Teens in Action category. Two years later, Ellie was crowned Miss Nevada and wowed the audience at the Miss America Pageant with her rendition of the song “Somebody to Love.”On Friday, Miss Nevada’s Outstanding Teen 2011 Bailey Gumm was crowned Miss Nevada 2016 on Friday and will represent the state at the Miss America Pageant later this year. The Miss America Pageant will be televised by ABC.
