COTABATO CITY – Moro officials advocating socio-cultural and tourism development have expressed elation over the reported intention of Filipino facilitators to use inaul fabrics as part of candidates’ attires in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Manila next year.
“It was a fruitful day. Mama Renee shared me the good news that our inaul will be showcased in the global event,” Maguindanao 1st District Rep. Bai Sandra Sema said Sunday, referring to fashion designer Renee Salud.
Inaul is a hand-woven cloth made up of colorfully mixed fabrics reflecting age-old Moro tradition. It is produced mainly in Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur for several decades but has penetrated the garment industry elsewhere only in recent years.
Rep. Sema said she was elated by Salud’s information because she “champions” the promotion of inaul not only as a Maguindanaon but as chairperson of the House Tourism committee.
She urged inaul weavers and marketers from Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur to coordinate her office for possible supply of inaul garments worthy of the global event.
