Timaru's Miss Universe New Zealand candidate says the competition has made her more empathetic and a better version of herself.
On Friday morning Erinmaire Phillips, 20, will fly out from Auckland to the Philippines with the 19 other New Zealand contestants.
They will be joined by Miss Universe New Zealand organiser Nigel Godfrey.
They will spend 11 days in the Southeast Asian country, meeting with their sponsors, attending dinners, doing a swimwear shoot and spending time with local children.

"I love hanging out with kids as it is, so going over there and meeting different [children] ... I'm really excited.
"The whole experience of getting to be in a different country and a different culture - Miss Universe has given us so much, but it's actually more about what we give them."
The competition had given her "a lot of confidence", she said.
"It's helped me help kids, because I work with kids all the time and that's what all my jobs involve. It's taught me how to be more empathetic and work with all types of people."
Phillips said regardless of the outcome of the competition, she was a "better me" for it.
"I really do believe that."
Phillips holds down three jobs in Timaru, as a teacher aid, a volunteer lifeguard and first responder for St John Ambulance.
She said her employers had been understanding and supportive of her taking part in the competition.
Miss Universe New Zealand will be announced in a televised final on September 3, filmed at Sky City in Auckland.
People wanting to support Phillips can pay to vote either online or at jars stationed at businesses, including Saikou and the CBay centre, around Timaru.
"[Voting's] really important, 50 per cent of the results on the night is just on public voting."
Before the final, Phillips will hold three raffles and a quiz night fundraiser at The Anchor and Sail for her chosen charity, Variety New Zealand.
A dollar from every $5 she makes from votes will also go to charity.
