Second time lucky for Tully’s Miss World Australia Madeline Cowe

THE world’s biggest international beauty pageant has put a tiny town in Far North Queensland on the map.
Tully, the home of the golden gumboot, has found fame as the birthplace of Madeline Cowe, who was crowned Miss World Australia in Melbourne on Friday night.

The 23-year-old law student beat other state and territory winners, including the Northern Territory’s first indigenous entrant, Maminydjama Maymuru, to clinch the coveted title just a year after placing runner-up in the 2015 competition.
Ms Cowe said she was feeling “very overwhelmed”.
“I’m so grateful and just very, very excited,” she said.
“The funniest thing is my whole life, I was always last to get ready and my grandma would always say ‘come on, Miss World’ and now I actually am Miss World Australia.”
Ms Cowe hopes to finish her law studies this year and use her status in the role to inspire other young people to follow their dreams.
“Growing up in Tully, you don’t really aspire to enter pageants or do modelling – it’s just not something that comes up that often,” she said.
“I want to visit kids in rural areas and let them know that anything is possible, and they can achieve whatever they want to do, whether that be a model or a doctor.”
The next few days will be a whirlwind of fashion shoots and media appearances for Ms Cowe before she flies out to Thailand with her fellow top five Miss World Australia finalists.
In December, she will travel to Washington, US, for the international heats.
“I think it will be very different to the Australian competition but I have Courtney (Thorpe) and Tess (Alexander) as mentors, so they’re going to prepare me very well,” she said.
