Mark McDermoth, national co-director of the Miss Universe Jamaica Beauty Fashion and Wellness Pageant, assured The Gleaner, at the pageant's recent media launch, held at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, that this bevy of beauties is a "strong group" and that the nation is in for an amazing show.
"We are back!" declared McDermoth. "Last year was admittedly, as Karl (Williams) calls it 'annus horribilis'," he joked. "But we're going to make a real comeback this year. We went far-a-field to recruit, and we believe that we have found girls that are world-class," he said.
In an effort to spread the reach of the pageant beyond the Corporate Area, national directors Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams have included the winners of the island's regional pageants. Three pre-selected finalists of Miss Universe Jamaica 2016 are Isabel Dalley, Miss Universe Northwest 2016, Candace McLeod, Miss Universe Northeast 2016 and Liane Chung, Miss Universe East 2016. Twenty other females will be vying for the crown on August 27 at the Jamaica Pegasus.
Reiterating the organisation's attempt to regain it's glory, McDermoth revealed that media and communications veteran Fae Ellington is on board as a voice and speech coach for the contestants "to make sure that our title winner becomes a media dynamite," he told The Gleaner. "We are aiming for excellence; the bar is up there. We're looking for an amazing title winner. That's what we're looking for."
