Wurtzbach to wear Pinoy-made gown in Miss Universe

MANILA – Pia Wurtzbach expects to leave for Las Vegas next week to represent the Philippines in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant.
In an interview with ABS-CBNnews.com on Wednesday, Wurtzbach said the Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. (BPCI) has yet to book her ticket. “The estimate date is on November 30,” she said.
Asked if her family will be with her, she said: “They will be there towards the end na, closer to the coronation night.”
As she waits for her sendoff, the Filipina beauty queen shared the things that are keeping her busy these past few days.
“Packing! The working out, I’ve been doing it for months already so now it’s just really maintenance. Right now, what’s really keeping me busy are the guestings, the clothes, the styling, really the preparation that I need to do considering the weather when I get there and how many clothes I need, how many dresses, gowns and what kind of style are we going for,” she said.
Wurtzbach assured that she will definitely wear a gown created by a Filipino, although she refused to identify the designer.
It would be recalled that when MJ Lastimosa competed in Miss Universe early this year, many Filipinos took to social media to criticize her white gown by Colombian designer Alfredo Barazza, which netizens believed ruined Lastimosa’s chances of winning the crown.
Lastimosa only made it to the Top 10 of the international pageant, breaking the string of Top 5 finishes for the Philippines since Venus Raj in 2010.
Strongest contender
Meanwhile, Wurtzbach said she doesn’t have any specific person in mind on who could possibly be her strongest contender in the beauty pageant.
“The strong contenders will always be the ones who are prepared. I don’t think it really changes every year because it’s usually South America. They are the ones who are kind of into pageants the way that we are. It’s really the Latinas,” she said.
Despite this, Wurtzbach is confident that she has a good chance of winning the competition.
“We have good training here in all aspects, in the gym, walking, styling. Binibining Pilipinas, they also like to make sure that you are prepared in all aspects. I think I have a good chance because of the training that I have been doing here,” she said.
And even though the coronation night is still weeks away on December 20 (December 21 in Manila), Wurtzbach noted that several Filipinos already bought tickets.
“I heard that a lot of Filipinos already bought tickets and some of them even booked their hotel in the same hotel where we are staying. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I don’t feel like I’m going to be homesick at all because if there are a lot of Filipinos there, then I will like I’m at home,” she said.
Wurtzbach vowed to give her best to bring home the Miss Universe crown for the Philippines.
The Philippines only has two Miss Universe titleholders -- Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.
