JOHANNESBURG SOUTH: Miss Earth South Africa, Carla Viktor (25), is preparing for the 15th annual Miss Earth pageant in Vienna, Austria, on December 5. Viktor’s flight to Austria is sponsored by Innovating Tomorrow’s Technology (Pty) Ltd and Perfect Gadgets.
Approximately 100 beauties from countries across the globe will share their environmental message and vision at the pageant.
The host country is home to the Austrian Alps which cover 62 per cent of Austria’s total land area and is on the same continent and at the same time as COP21 in Paris.
With this in mind Miss Earth South Africa spearheaded the global #BigO2Challenge campaign to challenge the Miss Earth contestants around the world to plant 21 trees ahead of the COP21.
Viktor, Milanie Cilliers and Celetia Reynders started the #BigO2Challenge in the semi-final round of this year’s Miss Earth SA pageant. Many trees were planted and individuals, corporates, schools and the general public were encouraged to get involved and plant trees.
“Climate Change will be the biggest challenge we face in our lifetime, and it’s up to us to realise that we will be the catalysts for change that will push our countries towards a greener tomorrow. Planting a tree might seem like a simple act, but in effect it’s about being part of a global movement to secure a future for the generations to come,” said executive director of Miss Earth South Africa, Catherine Constantinides.
Thus far 21 trees have been planted in Johannesburg, Tswane, Potchefstroom, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
“The challenge not only combats deforestation, it also creates a sense of active participation and raises much needed awareness for this important cause,” said Viktor.
