Love Island sex row: Why the disgraceful Miss Great Britain tsars need to stop shaming Zara Holland
So the prudes at Miss Great Britain have stripped Love Island contestant Zara Holland of her Miss GB title after she had sexon the ITV2 show.
What a disgrace that an organisation which supposedly prides itself on being a platform for women’s rights should “decrown” Holland after her on-screen antics.
Have they never seen Love Island? The whole point of the show is that the contestants are looking for love – and we all know that romance comes in all forms. Anyone with a close eye on the series will also know that Holland is one of the most level-headed contestants, who just happens to have been unlucky in her matchmaking efforts so far.
Two weeks into the show - which plonks 12 singletons on an island and lets sparks fly - and she has already faced two love triangles and a myriad of setbacks.
But she's popular with viewers. Indeed, it was they who voted her the winner of a 'date night' contest with Alex Bowen (the hunky ex of Geordie Shore star Vicky Pattison - do keep up) in the show’s romantic hideaway.
It may not be to everyone’s tastes but come on; this is 2016, not 1916. And if you don’t like it? Don’t watch it.
For those who have been quick to criticise the former Miss GB for having sex on the show, last time I checked, it takes two to tango. The “blame” has thus far rested solely on her shoulders, but no doubt many will be quick to praise Bowen for “getting lucky”.
No wonder the pageant has been criticised on social media for being 'sexist'.
Caroline Flack, the presenter of the show, tweeted: "Feel even more sorry for Zara now she's been de-crowned. She's a very sweet girl . What even is 'miss GB' ? Are we living in the dark ages?"
While Twitter used Laura Bird wrote: "Zara Holland is a sexually empowered woman and doesn't deserve this kind of public embarrassment - wouldn't happen to a man."
The world of beauty pageants is far removed from the world I exist in. It was only when the self-assured, warm and bright personality that is Zara Holland popped up on my television set that my world aligned with hers. So why can't the Miss Great Britain tsars see her TV appearance as great PR for their cause (one which many already consider outdated)?
Decrowning Holland, their statement read: "We pride ourselves on promoting the positivity of pageants in modern society and this includes the promotion of a strong, positive female role model in our winners.
"The feedback we have received from pageant insiders and members of the general public is such that we cannot promote Zara as a positive role model moving forward.
"We wholly understand that everyone makes mistakes, but Zara, as an ambassador for Miss Great Britain, simply did not uphold the responsibility expected of the title."
She will be replaced by runner-up Deone Robertson, who had been crowned Miss North Lanarkshire, and will now compete in the Miss World competition in Holland's place.
On Thursday night's show, Holland said she regretted the decision to have sex. She told the cameras: "You know when you're in the moment and it just happens. That's really not like me at all. Why couldn't we have just gone to sleep?"
If Holland has regrets, that's her business. But the mean-spirited bosses at Miss GB need to ditch the chastity belt routine. After all, it's Love Island, not Abstinence Island.
