For Brenna Weick, the fourth time’s the charm.
After finishing as the runner-up twice and the second runner-up in her last three Miss New Jersey pageants, Weick, of Mantua, Gloucester County, finally found herself standing at the center of the stage in the Ocean City music pier as the tiara was placed on her head by former Miss New Jersey Lindsey Giannini.
“It’s unreal,” Weick said. “It’s really hard to describe. ... I have dreamt about what that would feel like for so long being that my name is always called as first runner-up. It’s just disbelief and excitement.”
When Weick was announced as the winner Saturday night, more than 60 people who took up a large part of the left side of the crowd jumped up, crying and screaming in excitement, in the packed Music Pier.
“I’m really lucky,” Weick said. “I have a really big family who is surprisingly really interested in my pageantry endeavors. They love that they compete in pageants.”
She also noted that several of her friends and former dance teachers attended.
On Sunday, Weick stood in front of multiple photographers on a crowded beach next to the music pier for what was her first official photo shoot as the 2016 Miss New Jersey. The shoot was a taste of what she will experience over the next year, when she will compete in the Miss America pageant, visit schools, attend numerous events and more.
In the next few days, she has headshots scheduled, workouts and a lot of paperwork to fill out.
But she said Giannini has prepared her for what’s to come over the next year.
“She’s always great with advice,” Weick said. “She read (the contestants) a list of things she had been keeping in a journal for the next Miss New Jersey.”
Some of those things included having plenty of extra eyelashes, taking in every moment and constantly talking with family and friends about what’s going to happen next.
Giannini also gave Weick the passwords to the social media accounts for Miss New Jersey.
“I can’t wait to get started with that and have an online presence,” Weick said.
The online presence on social media also connects directly with her platform, titled “A World of Difference: Navigating the Cybersphere.”
The goal of the platform is to teach children and adults how to use the internet in a safe way. She said that she has noticed young kids are now on social media, so it’s important to teach them to be safe and to make them aware that their actions, even if sent from a phone, can still have consequences.
“I want them to use it with respect and make sure they’re not putting other people down,” she said. “I’ve seen a lot of that with the kids I work with and it’s really disheartening. So I want them to grow up having respect for themselves and their friends ... not only in their everyday life but online as well.”
But beyond the role she will play in children’s lives in schools and online, she will also be getting ready for the largest pageant of her life, Miss America.
With just more than 80 days until the competition, Weick will focus on something that no Miss New Jersey has experienced since Suzette Charles in 1984 — becoming Miss America.
“I think every Miss New Jersey has had what it takes to be Miss America, it’s just really hard to get across to the judges,” she said. “There’s just so many wonderful state title holders. I think it’s going to take a lot of perseverance and tenacity, which I think I’ve been able to prove in my competitive years.”
