Icelandic Beauty Queen Quits Contest
An Icelandic beauty queen has caught worldwide attention by quitting a beauty contest in Las Vegas after being told she’d have to lose weight to have a chance to win.
Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir, who last year was chosen Miss Iceland, was going to take part in Miss Grand International in Las Vegas. On Friday, she wrote a message in Icelandic on Snapchat, saying that the owner of the beauty contest had sent her a message through staff members, telling her she was too fat and would have to lose weight before the final evening of the contest, Tuesday night, Vísir reports. She was told to stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and have water for dinner. The message was sent, she was told, because the owner liked her and wanted her to do well in the contest.
At that time, Arna stated, “If the owner of the contest really wants me to lose weight, then he doesn’t deserve to have me in the top ten, top five, or whatever.” She added, “I have no interest in doing my best on stage for those who don’t deserve me.”
On Saturday, someone had clearly translated her message into English. Arna met with the owner, and following that meeting, she told Vísir that there had been a misunderstanding between the staff and the owner regarding the message. The owner had not been encouraging her to lose weight.
Arna regretted making that statement and now admits that she had orders to say there had been a misunderstanding, Vísir reports.
Her message on Facebook reads, “I’m going to stand up for myself, all women and the Icelandic nation. I’m not going to be told I have too much fat on my body to look good on stage. I’m quitting.”
